The doctors told Tom’s family not to expect much.
After a bicycle accident, he had a traumatic brain injury that significantly diminished his speech and memory. The expectation was that Tom would never complete high school, live independently or hold a job.
Then, he came to the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center for comprehensive, residential treatment.
At WWRC’s Brain Injury Services, Tom received medical treatment, cognitive training, and relearned independent living skills. Speech pathologists worked with Tom so he could communicate clearly. Educational Support helped him learn to read—a skill he had completely lost—and vocational instructors let him try numerous occupations. Tom especially enjoyed woodworking and even made a pie safe for his mother.
After rehabilitation, Tom returned to high school, but came back to WWRC for the driving program where occupational therapists determined if he could drive safely. Today Tom not only drives and a job with an airline, but he also attends the University of Virginia.
Tom is one of the many success stories of the WWRC which serves over 3,000 Virginians coping with disabilities such as autism, stroke, spinal cord injuries, learning disabilities, hearing and vision problems, ALS and more.
The Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center Foundation exists to help the WWRC help people like Tom achieve independence through employment. The Foundation supplements state support and underwrites emerging needs, ensuring a continuation of innovative and quality rehabilitation services that have given WWRC its national reputation.
