The USO of Metropolitan Washington Brings Thanksgiving to a Military Family
U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Nikki Cobb thanks USO-Metro for making Thanksgiving dinner available for her family. This single mother of two has had a difficult couple of years when it comes to making holiday meals happen. Thanks to Turkeys for Troops, one of USO-Metro’s many signature programs and services, Staff Sergeant Cobb was able to provide her family with a holiday meal this past Thanksgiving.
Before USO-Metro’s Turkeys for Troops food gift basket program, Staff Sergeant Cobb and her family were unable to celebrate Thanksgiving the traditional way. Her son, Jeremy, wrote a paper for school on Thanksgiving that read “We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. We just sat around, watched movies and ate chicken.” Cobb choked up with tears when she read this as it reminded her that her son does find the holidays and family important. His paper continued his thoughts on Thanksgiving by stating his family does not celebrate this holiday because they did not have family in the area to celebrate with.
Then this past year, his mother received a Thanksgiving food gift basket courtesy of USO-Metro. This gift has helped her two year old daughter celebrate her first Thanksgiving and provided Staff Sergeant Cobb with warm holiday memories with her family in Iowa.
With donations from the public, USO-Metro will continue this program to bring a touch of home to many military families who spend the holiday season stationed far away.
