The Jasper Difference - Service Dogs of Virginia

Words cannot begin to express my appreciation for everything Service Dogs of Virginia has done for me.

BTwo years ago my life changed in an instant when I was paralyzed from the chest down as a result of a motorcycle accident. I have worked incredibly hard to get back to as “normal” as possible and to not have to rely on others to get through the day.

From the moment I entered the SDV training facility and was enthusiastically greeted by several of their dogs-in-training, I knew things were finally going to take a turn for the better.

I couldn’t believe it when they paired me with Jasper – the most outgoing, expressive, energetic and downright humorous dog I’ve ever met. We immediately connected and my life changed again in an instant.

Jasper has been helping me by picking up things I drop, opening and closing cabinets and doors, and getting drinks for me from the refrigerator when I am out of my chair. This may not seem like a lot, but it has made a huge difference in my life.

He goes everywhere with me – to the store, to work, and even out with friends and he never waivers in his duties. People no longer notice my wheelchair, they notice Jasper and they connect with me again.

This journey I’ve been on to become fully independent is finally happening – Jasper and I are on our way and everyday gets better and better. Words cannot begin to express my appreciation for everything Service Dogs of Virginia has done for me.
