The Salvation Army – Tidewater Area Command

The Salvation Army – Tidewater Area CommandAlexis first came to The Salvation Army’s Hope Center in March 2011. She had recently been incarcerated and was now homeless and struggling with drug addiction. Alexis had found the Hope Center through the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team and spent time enough at the center to know of its day services.

Though the Hope Center shelter serves men in their 30-bed shelter, women can participate in the invaluable day services. Alexis was offered clothing, a voice mail account, a mailing address and most importantly, substance abuse counseling. The Salvation Army helped Alexis obtain rehabilitation treatment and 30 days ofshelter with another agency.

In April 2011, Alexis proudly moved into The Salvation Army’s HOPE Village, a transitional housing program that offers supportive services to homeless women and single mothers in our community. In HOPE Village, Alexis is continuing her substance abuse counseling while receiving additional life and employment skills training. Alexis finally sees a bright future that will include having a stable job and her own home! She truly feels blessed that The Salvation Army refused to give up on her…even when she had given up on herself.

The Salvation Army assists our community everyday with basic human needs, such as food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, utility or rent assistance, coats, blankets, transportation and HOPE for individuals that have lost their way. Please support The Salvation Army Tidewater Area Command by designating your gift to CVC Code #5040.
