Qavah’s Castle – The Children’s Inn at NIH

Childrens Angel Flight7-year-old Qavah was adopted by the Campbell family of Troutville, VA in 2007, after having spent much of her life in hospitals or foster care. She suffers from Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA), a disease so rare that doctors told the Campbells that they had very few options and the future looked grim. When the family heard about DBA studies taking place at the National Institutes of Health, they knew they had reason to hope, but their financial situation left them wondering how they would afford the trip. That’s where The Children’s Inn came in.

When Qavah first saw The Inn, she exclaimed “Mommy, it’s a castle!” From the first moment the family stepped inside the Inn, they knew it was a place for children to mend and heal. While Qavah has a demanding testing schedule at the hospital, she always knows at the end of the day she will return to play at her “castle.”

The Campbells met other families at the Inn who encouraged them with their success stories. Today, they have hope that a cure will be found. While Qavah loves the playrooms and activities, weary parents come through the door at the end of the day to find refreshments in the lobby, and on certain evenings, a hot meal.

“The contributors to the Children's Inn make it possible for our children to forget that they are sick and, for a time, they become a prince and princess at a very special castle,” says Qavah’s Mom.
