My name is Darrell. I’m still ashamed to admit this, but I was sexually abused by my uncle when I was a kid. It started when I was about six or seven and went on until he moved away when I was 17. I never told anyone what was happening to me. I was too afraid and he said if I told my mom and dad, they wouldn’t love me anymore. Then when I was older, I heard my friends joking about being gay and I wondered, “Am I gay?” I was so afraid someone would find out about my secret and about what would happen if someone did.

When I was 10, I started drinking. I was using drugs by age 11, and by the time I was 15, I had attempted suicide twice. I left home as soon as I could but running away didn’t help much. My life continued to spiral out of control until one day I picked up a brochure about The James House (CVC #7459). It took a lot of courage, but I called and spoke to an advocate. I began receiving individual counseling and was able to process my experience and begin to heal from the abuse. I’m not 100% yet, but I am well on my way. I am stronger and better able to cope. I have hope for my future.
