Henrico CASA

Henrico CasaSpeaking up for a Child

Her husband was a heavy substance abuser. He was in and out of jail, often exposing the children to domestic violence and illegal drug activity. Although she loved him, she finally removed herself and their two children, one with a hearing impairment, from the home.

Her next challenge was to gain custody of her children and file for divorce. Court proceedings started at the New Year. CASA was ordered on the case. The mother was a bit slow getting her feet beneath her. During the first year, mistakes were made. CASA continued to encourage the family to strive for the best outcome possible. Soon this family grew strong again. Her youngest son had to leave the area to attend a school with other hearing impaired students to address his educational needs.

With CASA’s assistance, the mother was able to access additional resources and guidance. She took the time to educate herself on her son’s disability and finally learned sign language. She now takes her oldest son with her to classes so he can better communicate with his brother.

Today, both children and mom are doing great. Most amazingly, the youngest child’s world has opened up due to the ability to freely communicate with his love ones. CASA’s ever present support and empathy helped put this child and his family on a much more productive and happier path.
