Girl Scout Camp 2011-Camp You Can
For almost 100 years, Girl Scouts have been helping in their communities and offering service. Everyone benefits - the Girl Scout who is learning responsibility, leadership and citizenship, and the people in the community receiving the service. Girl Scout Senior Megan Barnes made a difference through her service project for some very special people.
As a big sister to two boys with autism, she knows the challenges autistic children face. She spent months preparing, planning and organizing a summer day camp for children in Portsmouth. She secured a site for the camp, booked field trips to swimming clubs, parks and other locations, and recruited buddies for each camper. "Camp You Can" was a huge success and parents want to keep it going. Megan has volunteered to be at the lead next summer and train other volunteers to take over the project, as well as trying to create an after-school program for the school year. A Girl Scout of eleven years, she believes Girl Scouting has had a huge impact on her life and the lives of others she has been able to touch.
