Keeping Babies Covered!
A majority of the babies returned to CCC each Monday with the same diaper they had on when they left the center on Friday. Severe diaper dermatitis resulted, to the point of open sores, prompting CCC to start delivering diapers to children’s homes. Said one parent, “It’s hard asking someone for diapers, but CCC always makes us feel like family.”
CCC’s diaper program known as Capital Diaper Bank provides diapers to low income families in Virginia through a diaper distribution network comprised of direct service, health, child welfare, and community agencies. CCC is a second responder to Virginia Homeland Security, Child Protective Services and local Police Departments. Our immediate goals are to increase the number of diapers available for distribution; to support, advise and counsel parents on safe health practices; and to continue to raise awareness of the need for economic stability in at-risk communities.
Resources for free or discounted diapers are few for families in need as food stamps cannot be used to purchase diapers and diaper manufacturers don’t donate diapers, even to crisis nurseries and shelters. For many parents in our community without sufficient resources, the reality is devastating: they are forced to keep their children in diapers for too long or try to clean and reuse disposable diapers, putting their children at risk of painful infections and potential abuse. A child is a gift…to be cherished, nurtured and loved!
