Brain Injury Services
Charlize was only 2-1/2 years old when a blood vessel suddenly ruptured in her brain. She was transported by helicopter to Georgetown University Hospital where she underwent lifesaving surgery. Charlize was then transferred to a rehabilitation hospital where she was treated for about a month. She returned home with a significant disability.
She and her family were referred to Brain Injury Services, (BIS). A compassionate and knowledgeable pediatric case manager met with her and her family. In 2001, Brain Injury Services was the first to offer a pediatric and adolescent program in Virginia. After a thorough assessment, her case manager connected Charlize to a special school program, located therapy providers and secured grant funding to help the family with the expenses. Hope was restored.
BIS offers a much needed Parent Support Group, while Charlize and her brother attend a Kids Activity Program. Since parents are often very stressed and stretched with their child’s continuing needs, BIS is also able to offer respite from donations such as yours. Additionally, the BIS case manager arranged for a neuropsychological assessment to help with school planning. Perhaps Charlize’s greatest joy is the specialized dance program where her disabilities fade and new skills emerge. Charlize has made amazing progress and her parents are very proud and grateful to Brain Injury Services!
