Montgomery County Friends of Animal Care
and Control
When the Virginia Tech Whitewater Women stopped to leave a car at their canoe take out spot, they saw a skinny hound limping along the river bank. Very friendly and obviously hungry, she charmed one of the members into sharing her lunch.
Later that afternoon, the dog was still in the same spot waiting to greet them. Several more women shared their lunches. According to Val, one of the canoeists, “We couldn’t just leave her there hurt and starving, and we were all so taken with this dog because she was just so sweet”. So the hound happily hopped into one of the waiting cars for a ride to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
Once at the shelter, Montgomery County Friends of Animal Care and Control volunteers rushed the dog to the vet. After evaluation, the dog’s injured front leg, which had been broken for some time, was amputated. The canoeists suggested the name Tippecanoe, Tippy for short. After adjusting to life as a tripod, Tippecanoe now happily runs, retrieves balls, and plays with other dogs.
Tippecanoe is just one of many dogs helped by the efforts of FACC volunteers. Funds raised by FACC help pay for veterinary care for dogs like Tippecanoe. Volunteers also provide follow up care, socialize dogs to improve chances of adoption, and help to place shelter dogs in new homes and rescue groups.
