RAPPAHANNOCK AREA AGENCY ON AGING, INC.
Growing Stronger With Community and Friends

Agency provides help after hip surgeryPenny Woodstock has been a client of the Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging since August 2007. Her neighbors, who had been helping Ms. Woodstock stay in her home, contacted the Agency. Miss Woodstock had had hip replacement surgery, which did not go well. Coupled with back trouble and the need for replacement of the other hip, keeping up with the everyday tasks was a burden. The neighbors had been completing tasks such as laundry, house cleaning, cooking meals and transporting her to medical appointments. These neighbors were in desperate need of respite from caregiving. All involved are over the age of 65.

Contact was made with Miss Woodstock and homemaker services were started. At the beginning, the Agency’s homemaker went to the house once a week to complete light housekeeping tasks as well as laundry and grocery shopping. As she has recovered from additional surgery so well, services have been changed to biweekly.

Miss Woodstock remains in her home. She had been receiving physical therapy through a home health agency and is now able to continue to strengthen both her back and new hips in her community pool. Her recovery is less stressful, as she is at home and not in a facility, her home and laundry are clean and she has the foods she likes to eat. Miss Woodstock also has the continued support of her neighbors now that they do not feel overwhelmed. Their time in her home is on a social basis, as it should be.
