The NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY

JeremyJeremy, a single dad with MS and his 12 year-old daughter, live with Jeremy’s aging parents.  Before contacting the National Capital Chapter, Jeremy had not received treatment for his MS for years and was frequently stuck in the house due to two inaccessible entrances to his parents’ home.

As a result of our programs, he and his family received: an electric hospital bed, handrails for the front steps, a ramp for the back door (Jeremy can now ride his scooter from the house to the car himself), funds for his daughter’s school trip, and transportation for food stamp reauthorization.  His daughter, Amy, took part in our Kidventure program, which is designed for children with a parent with MS.

During a home visit, Amy shared that she feels better that her dad is seeing a neurologist now.  Amy also shared that the Kidventure program has changed her life.  Before participating, she said she felt shy and had difficulty making friends, but after attending the outings, she feels more outgoing and is more comfortable making friends.  Amy wrote the following:  “The National MS Society doesn’t just let you express your feelings with children who are under the same circumstances as you; they give you an opportunity to grow up with those children and just enjoy being a kid.”
