Making A Difference

A Gift of Life

AlanaTerry and Lisa say they are blessed. In 2004, the couple became foster parents to Alana through the CCC Therapeutic Foster Care program in Norton. Today they describe Alana as their unique gift.

Alana’s young life has been difficult – filled with serious illness and uncertainty. Born with a brain stem and only partial additional brain material, Alana’s doctors predicted that she had approximately six more months to live. They questioned why Terry and Lisa were interested in adopting her.  As Lisa struggled with the emotional decision, Terry said, “If we don’t go get her, we are going to miss out on everything God has for us.”  Lisa said the answer then became clear, and she and Terry began the adoption process.

Last June, Alana, the child who was predicted to live less than a year, celebrated her third birthday with her adoring, adoptive family. The feeding tube is now gone, and Alana eats baby food and drinks from a “sippy” cup. She recognizes the voices of everyone in the house, giggles and loves to be held.  “We treat her like a normal kid,” Lisa said.

Alana continues to thrive, but her family knows that her condition could change. Terry and Lisa know that Alana’s time with them may be limited.  They treasure every day they have with her.  “She makes me want to get out of bed and see what that day holds for her,” Lisa said.  “I would encourage any family to choose a child to add that kind of love and compassion to their home.”

There are opportunities available to make a difference in the life of a child.  If you are interested in learning more about adoption or foster care, visit the CCC website at www.cccofva.org.
