Making A Difference

Volunteer Emergency Families for Children (VEFC) helps make a difference…

VEFCA young mother and her 2-month-old twin daughters, Lisa and Melanie were homeless and living in a shelter.  The babies were born premature and had medical issues, but their mother had not taken them back to the doctor for follow-up appointments. Both of the babies had been exposed to drugs, anemia, and Hepatitis C in utero.  One was born with a brain hemorrhage and one had failed a hearing test.  One of the girls also had an abnormal metabolic screening and needed careful follow-up care.

Because of the significant health issues of the babies the local department of social services (DSS) placed them with a VEFC family so their mom had time to find a place to live and receive counseling.  This was the first placement for the host family and they were thrilled when the babies arrived.  The VEFC family gathered resources ~ clothes, formula, bottles, blankets, and a crib from friends and their extended church family.  They lovingly cared for the girls, got them to their doctor’s appointments on schedule ~ and watched them thrive while in their care.

Thanks to the care provided by the VEFC host family, Lisa and Melanie were able to have a safe loving place to stay while the social worker with DSS worked with their mother to help get her back on her feet.  VEFC was a gift to those little angels and their mother who needed a miracle!

Volunteer Emergency Families for Children is a CVC recognized charity
