for an applicant to receive services. What determines the amount of aid
provided? If charges are made for services rendered, how are levels determined
and in what cases are the charges waived, if any?
Our mission was, and continues to be, to provide free, high- quality legal assistance to low-income Washington, D.C. residents who are unable to afford a lawyer, to train third-year law students in courtroom advocacy skills and imbue in them a commitment to pro bono service, to help the courts by providing assistance and representation to indigent persons, to assist the legal profession by participating in educational and mentoring programs for volunteer lawyers in the areas of housing, consumer and criminal law, and by referring clients to appropriate legal counsel.
While other non-profits address homelessness in different ways, LSIC intervenes in crises to prevent homelessness one person and one family at a time, employing legal defenses available in the courts and administrative tribunals. LSIC clients are mainly African-American and Latino whose incomes often fall well below the federal poverty guidelines. Many are women heads of households with young children or heads of extended families either on public assistance, disability assistance or in welfare-to-work situations. Since 1968, LSIC has tried more than 10,000 cases, has trained more than 2,500 lawyers and has assisted more than 250,000 low-income individuals. LSIC is particularly proud of its role in training students who have not only gone on to distinguished legal careers, but who have also excelled in their pro bono commitment to help the underserved in their communities. Many alumni have had or have careers in government and public interest work. |
